Jamie Sweeting is President, Planettera, & VP for Social Enterprise and Sustainability, G Adventures.
For more than 25 years, Jamie Sweeting has built a career around crafting and achieving sustainable development and conservation strategies for the tourism sector, because he believes so strongly in the power of travel to improve people’s lives.
He currently serves as the President of the Toronto-based not-for-profit Planeterra Foundation, as well as Vice President for Social Enterprise and Sustainability at the award-winning, small-group travel company, G Adventures. His work helps drive G Adventures’ efforts to support social and environmental solutions around the world via its global network of travelers and more than 700 different guided tours.
Working closely on G Adventures’ product development, Jamie oversees the integration of small, locally-owned enterprises in the G Adventures supply chain. To date, more than 50,000 people in 31 countries have benefited. These industry-leading development efforts have redefined the small group tour experience for hundreds of thousands of travelers, while creating local, sustainable jobs for under-resourced communities — especially marginalized women, disadvantaged youth, and indigenous and traditional peoples.
Prior to Jamie’s work with Planeterra and G Adventures, he held the role of Chairman at the U.S.-based nonprofit organization, Sustainable Travel International. He continues to engage in policy and destination management as part of its Board of Directors.
Jamie previously served as vice president, environmental stewardship and global chief environmental officer for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., guiding the company’s efforts to conserve and protect natural resources. He was also senior director of the Travel and Leisure program for Conservation International’s industry-leading Center for Environmental Leadership in Business, where he helped companies realize the benefits of becoming industry leaders in conservation and community development.
When Jamie is not working or traveling on business, you can either find him enjoying time with his wife Amy and two teenage children in western Massachusetts, or fishing beautiful locations around the world.
