Giles Gilbert, Regional Manager Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) for Malaysia Airlines, has worked in the commercial airline industry within sales for over 25 years.
Giles has achieved commercial success leading sales teams to revenue and target achievement. Giles’ teams are empowered to achieve success and are encouraged to be brave and forward-thinking. Disaster Management training is fundamental in the airline industry, in the hope that you never have to use that training. Whilst posted to Amsterdam between 2011 and 2014, Giles was the Country Manager for Malaysia Airlines during the MH17 incident, which departed from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on 17 July 2014.
Giles’ life was turned upside down with one phone call on the fate of MH17, resulting in the activation of a major crisis operation centre and the Family Support Office for several months.
Giles’ insights into turning from crisis mode back to commercial sustainability, with his personal experience, will surprise, shock and hopefully reaffirm the need for sustainable business continuity planning and training, and provide insightful ideas on handling both Governmental and NGO influences in such circumstances. Giles is now based in Melbourne, Victoria, where he works closely with trade partners across all parts of the ANZ region.
